Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is an herbaceous weed-like plant that spreads quickly and can out-compete native understory plants, including tree seedlings. Their small seeds can be spread by wind or by human activity.
The best way to control Garlic Mustard is with repeated hand pulls of second-year plants after they flower but before they go to seed (usually in May). Plants will be bagged and disposed of to prevent further spread. More info about Garlic Mustard can be found at - https://oaklandinvasivespecies.org/garlic-mustard/

Let's pull together!

THANK YOU COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS!
On May 2, 2026 - 31 bags of invasive garlic mustard were removed from Coldwater Springs Nature Area, including the woodland on the west side of Ridge road with a new accessible paved pathway.
This was the community's 5th year of stewardship here so the native plants have room to thrive!
