Holiday Greens Mart - Thqnk You!

Members of the Northville Garden Club wish to thank all the businesses and residents of the Northville community for their years of support.

Since 1975, the Northville Garden Club has brought fresh wreaths and roping to area businesses and residents to decorate for the holidays. During our annual Greens Mart our members sold wreaths that we adorned with pinecones and our bright, hand-made “signature” red bows.

All of the profits from our annual Greens Mart have always gone back into our community in the form of civic improvements, scholarships, and donations. Some of the organizations we have donated to include:

* Friends of the Northville District Library

* Gardens at the Yerkes House in Mill Race Village

* Northville Garden Club Park

* Allen Terrace

* Northville Historical Society

* Northville High School Scholarships

* Schoolcraft College Scholarships

* Woman’s National Farm and Garden Association Charities which include:

the Detroit Zoo, 4-H Children’s Garden, 4-H Great Lakes Camp, and the Matthaei Internship Fund for Horticultural Therapy

We regret to announce that the Northville Garden Club has decided to no longer hold our annual Greens Mart and will move forward with our fundraising efforts in a different way. We are exploring other avenues to support our charitable giving efforts and we appreciate your continued interest in our work.

It has been a true pleasure and joy to be a part of making our Northville Community truly beautiful for the holidays.

The Holiday Greens Mart

History of the Holiday Greens Mart

In 1975, the Northville Garden Club began its annual holiday greens sale to area businesses and residents. For 49 years, members worked together to bring fresh and top quality wreaths, roping, mixed bundles, and bows to our customers.

 During the year, garden club members collected pinecones. In the summer and fall, they got together to wire 2,800 individual pinecones.

Each year, a committee of talented bow makers made 500 bows out of waterproof red velvet ribbon that were attached to fresh wreaths and greenery. These hand-crafted  signature bows were made to a precise standard - right down to every loop and even the "nose."  Creating the "large bow," with eight loops and a double nose, could be tied only by the most experienced craftswomen, and left many newcomers tied in knots.

Profit from the sales of the greens went back into the community through the Northville Garden Club purposes which include beautifying garden areas in the Northville community, educational programs and workshops, conservation efforts and in the form of college scholarships awarded to Northville High School seniors and Schoolcraft College students.

Additionally, profit from this fundraiser helped support select other organizations which share our mission such as the 4-H Club and internships for the UM Matthaei Gardens.
